Homeless World Cup final today

| Comments | TrackBacks

Mr. Adolf Ogi, Special Adviser to the United Nations Secretary-General on Sport for Development and Peace sent his special congratulations to the organizers and the hosts of the Homeless Streetsoccer World Cup in Cape Town.

Archbishop Desmond Tutu was also there to welcome the players from the different nations.
'All over the world, I want to say, we've got to end homelessness. Everyone should have a home; it's a right and not a privilege,' he said.
'People treat the homeless as if they're sub-human. In order to overcome this discrimination, we have to unite against homelessness as we did when we fought apartheid,".

Tutu also said that although he wished he could be nicer and tell all the teams he hoped they would win, he could not.
'I want South Africa to win. I like you Nigeria. I like you Zambia. But the cup must stay here in South Africa. I wish I could be nice, but no,' Tutu told the teams.

Unfortunately his support was not enough to keep the South African team from getting knocked out somewhere along the way.The finals are due to be played between Russia and Kazakhstan at 5:30 pm Saturday

Mad as a Blatter ?

| Comments | TrackBacks

Blatter's latest idea about scrapping penalty shootouts may be considered to be one of his better ideas. He has made some loony suggestions in the past - notable among them was a suggestion to make the goals bigger to make life more difficult for goalkeepers.
Nick Miller writing in Sporting Life has a collection of some other possible creative innovations Blatter may have come up with to make football more interesting and entertaining !

Some of the innovations.....

* As we all know, Sepp is always trying to make football more inclusive and more representative of the world. Therefore, because the world is in fact 70% ocean, logic states that a World Cup must soon be held on the high seas. Before awarding the 2010 tournament to South Africa, Sepp was entertaining secret bids from the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans, as well as the Persian Gulf and the North Sea. The idea was only shelved after concerns that advertising boards would get soggy.

* Sepp came to the realisation that if football was to be considered a truly global game, it must represent all the world's inhabitants, not just humans. Therefore, a different animal would be allocated to each team qualifying for the World Cup, based on a handicap system. So, while Brazil would get a chicken for the midfield holding role, minnows like Saudi Arabia would be given a giant octopus to play in goal. If the rule had been enforced in Germany Sven would have been gifted a whale to "park the bus" after we'd gone 1-0 up.

The rest of his suggestions are here

Real Madrid's Spanish international captain Raul has been left out of the squad chosen by national boss Luis Aragones for next week's Euro 2008 qualifier against Sweden.

Ruud van Nistelrooy too has faced a similar fate and he too has again been left out of the Dutch squad for their Euro 2008 qualifiers against Bulgaria and Albania.

And while those two [along with Beckham] ponder the reasons for not being chosen Scott Parker's tenacious displays for Newcastle this season have won him a recall to the England squad for the qualifiers against Macedonia and Croatia.

Blatter proposes an end to penalty shoot outs.

| Comments | TrackBacks

FIFA president Sepp Blatter believes future World Cup finals should not be decided by penalties .
Penalty shoot-outs were introduced into the World Cup in 1982
Blatter said changes could be in place in time for the next world cup in South Africa in four years.
"When it comes to the World Cup final it is passion, and when it goes to extra time it is a drama," the head of world football's governing body said . "But when it comes to penalty kicks it is a tragedy.
Stating that penalties took away from the fact that football was a team sport he also suggested that the match could be replayed it were a final or some variation could be introduced into the golden goal rule.
"We have four years or so, so I think we have time," he said.

Beckenbauer while commenting on the lack of progress in South Africa regarding preparations for the 2010 World Cup said that part of the problem was African.
"These are not South African problems, these are African problems. People are working against rather than with each other.",he said.

Organising committee chief Danny Jordaan told the Cape Argus that he was bemused by Beckenbauer's comments.
"If it's a stadium problem, tell us. But he must explain what he means when he says it's an 'African problem'. I do not understand.
"We have a master project plan. We need to deliver five stadiums for the Confederation Cup in 2009 and four of these stadiums are complete," Jordaan said.
Amy Lawrence writing in the Observer says
"It is easy to patronise African football. People have been doing it for years, since the world guffawed at Zaire's Mwepu Llunga for not even knowing the rules for a free kick at the 1974 World Cup."

Look out for Emir Kusturica's documentary on Diego Maradona in post production now. It is due for release sometime at the end of this year and has an awesome soundtrack by Manu Chao. If you are a big fan of Kusturica, you should enjoy this documentary. I really enjoyed his movies Underground and White Cat, Black Cat.

Emir Kusturica has talked of this project several times :

"It is the first film that will treat all the aspects of the life of Maradona.
The film will be very complex to make, because I want to show the true personality of Maradona. Football is a science of a great mathematic precision !
The film ends when the former football player is in good health, and has no more addiction to drugs.
The film will show "the three Maradonas" I've discovered during the shooting : the football teacher, the politically incorrect citizen against the unilateral politics of the USA and the family man. These three Diegos will be in the end of the film I will shoot in the Aztec Stadium in Mexico, where Diego scored one of his most famous goals, during the World Cup 1986 against the English team."

Today was a good day if your club was called Arsenal because they all won their matches. There are two. The better known Arsenal FC plays for the English Premiership and has been around since 1886. The other Arsenal FC plays in the Argentinian Apertura and was formed in 1957, inspired by their English cousins. The founder Julio Grondona is also the present president of the Argentina Football Association. His son Julio R Grondona is the chairman of Arsenal FC also know as Arsenal di Sarandi.

Their most famous player is Jorge Burruchaga who scored the match winning goal against W. Germany in the World Cup finals in 1986. Cesc, Lehmann, and Adebayor pull it off against Man Utd

| 1 Comment | TrackBacks

Today was a proud, proud day for all Gooners. Minus Thierry Henry and RVP, Arsenal went to Old Trafford, packed to the seams with 76,000 fans and pulled it off against Man U, 1-0. The goalscorer, the most exasperating Emmanuel Adebayor. Never have long legs proved so fortuitous, as Adebayor poked it past Kusczak, for his first goal and the most important one this season. This after some absolutely neat footwork by the little maestro Fabregas, whose minimalism with his footwork seems enough to keep that ball attached to his feet.

Then it was left to Lehmann to pull off what must be the save of the season. From a blast by Solksjaer, that had Lehmann sprawling at full tilt, with right arm at full stretch and finger tips extended to the maximum as he finger poked the ball away from goal. Earlier, in the first half, Lehmann took an absolute cannonshot on his face from 8 feet away from Ronaldo. Lesser mortals would have been carted away and there was some really anxious moments as we saw Miguel Alumunia warming up on the sidelines but Lehmann got up, swatted away the stars and carried on. Good for Arsenal because he was there to make that stunning save of Solksjaer in the 89th minute.

Things could have been a lot worse for Man Utd if Gilberto had put that penalty kick past Kuczack who brought down Adebayor, in the first 10 minutes of the first half. Kuczack also just about managed to keep out a Eboue header.

It was Man Utd first stumble. They lost their first match of the season. To tell you the truth, althought they have won their first five, they have never looked authoritative. Louis Saha who has driven their attack was shut down by a hustling Arsenal midfield. Ryan Giggs was out and Michael Carrick was brought in late in the second half. John O'Shea was mediocre. Sir Alex is still looking for his Roy Keane. Owen Hargreaves is out in Bayern with a fractured leg which might make things difficult for a winter transfer. Wayne Rooney is still working on his match fitness and looks off.

Arsenal needed this win. After that miss by Gilberto, one again saw Arsenal pull into its familiar routine, of controlling the ball with nothing to show at the end of all that possession. Adebayor played Jekyll and Hyde, as he has done throughout his career. He makes the difficult look ridiculously easy and the ridiculously easy, most difficult. By that time you have pulled most of you hair out. This game he got it right.

Arsenal will be alright. At this point I think Man Utd have a lot more questions.

At this point Arsenal is still seeking its first win of the season and ranked 17th in the Premiership table, exactly 16 places below top Portsmouth!! The best news is that Arsenal will not be playing at the Emirates Stadium. Their new home has not been auspicious for the Gunners, having to settle for draws against Villa in the season opener and then fending of Boro.

Arsenal has been the prettiest team in the Premiership. Breathtaking passing orchestrated by little maestro Cesc Fabregas. It's like licking a goodtasting lolly. It goes down well but there is nothing left at the end of the stick. Pretty does not mean goals.

They don't have a punishing striker like Drogba who can carry two defenders on his back and score a goal. Arsenal for better or worse is a finesse team. It is time to bring Julio Baptista of the bench and inflict some pain. A win at the cost of some injury time to the Devils will be well worth it.

Where do the Gunners look to, to beat up on the next team? Portsmouth (Oops! We forgot they are not at the bottom, and they have that guy called Kanu. Did he not play for us, at some point?). There is Everton. We can clobber them (Reality check: They have a player called Andy Johnson, who is leading the league with 5 goals). What about the other side of London? West Ham. (Nope. They have Zamora and those boys who are not crying Argentina). There is always those relegation teams. Watford, Sheffield Utd, and Reading. Arsene says that Reading is about 7 places higher than we are. How did that happen!!!! Well, unlike Arsene Wenger, Steve Copell believes that the amount of passing that we do should lead to a goal.

I don't know if even Arsenal will be able to extricate themselves out of this, if they lose to Man Utd. Arsene may have to read up Alice in Wonderland and call upon the Mad Hatter, to resucitate Arsenal's season.

Rafa Benitez: Dazed and Confused, tell me it's not true

| Comments | TrackBacks

Liverpool is going through a mini crisis. A small one, but with this year's Premiership, with Portsmouth, Everton, and Aston Villa as the barbarians at the gates, every match has become as important as the next one. Last match, Liverpool was bludgeoned by Everton, 3-0. A game that left them forgetting the most elementary football skills. Jamie Carragher and Sami Hyppia played atrociously. A display so pitiful, that Carragher had to issue a public apology to Reds fans. Pepe Reina featured in the football bloopers of the year. Last week will not go down as one of the more illustrous periods in Reds history.

However, this season was not just about blunting Chelsea's hold on the Premiership but to march back into the Champions League. Last week's match left everybdoy scratching their heads, as Benitez left Steven Gerrard on the bench against PSV Eindhoven. The game muddled along, till Rafa had the bright idea of introducing Gerrard. Was Rafa's idea of playing against PSV without Gerrard akin to men who think they can wrestle with one hand tied to their back? PSV walked of with a draw, one that they were grateful for but a match that Liverpool should have won.

Whatever it is, the game against Chelsea tomorrow means that Liverpool cannot afford a defensive meltdown like that against Everton, otherwise Drogba and Shevchenko might run up a half dozen. But a match against a club like Chelsea is never just another match, so here you have Rafa playing mindgames.

What does this injury do for Hargreaves? Well, for one he will be less than match fit for the December transfer window. Sir Alex will have to take a chance now with bringing him to Man U, with each game becoming even more important in the second half of the Premiership.

As for Steve McLaren, he is confronted by the absence of his main holding midfielder, certainly a more cohesive unit with Lampard and Gerrard. Time to dust off Gareth Barry!

Gareth Barry: The best underrated player in England?

| Comments | TrackBacks

garethbarry.jpg

Gareth Barry is Aston Villa and Aston Villa is Gareth Berry. In the midst of all the high powered signings like the Ballacks, Shevchenko's, Gerrard's, Henry's, it is refreshing to know that there are players like Barry. Barry who???

After representing the U-21 squad and doing exceedingly well, Barry did make his breakthrough in the senior squad in 2000. He played 8 matches till 2003, the last year he played for England and since then has never managed to find a place in the squad.

A career trajectory comparison. He shares the record with Jamie Carragher for appearances in the U-21 squad. Carragher now plays for Liverpool and England and has represented them in 30 games.

He is on the tip of the tongue of every English manager and pundit from Hoddle to Sven to McLaren but then is overlooked when players like Frank Lampard, Joe Cole, Steven Gerrard, and Michael Carrick have cemented their spots in the midfield.

A pity. When you see Barry play, you wonder why he has never donned a Three Lions jersey more consistently. He is one of England's most versatile players. Essentially, a holding midfielder, but can play any position in defence. He is young too, only 25 years, but it seems he has been around for a long time. He has been with Villa since 1997 and is presently their captain. Under Martin O'Neill, Barry's career has seen an resurgence. One only had to see the Villa game against West Ham last weekend to realize the impact of Barry on the game. He along with Gavin McCann shut down the West Ham attack for long spells, especially in the first half. This was West Ham, with Tevez, Cole, Zamora, and Reo-Coker.

The arrival of Owen Hargreaves in the England squad means even fewer chances of Barry ever getting a call up for England duty. However, there is hope at the club level. He is the type of player that Martin O'Neill loves. It is too early to say but this could be the beginning of a relationship like that of Sir Alex and Roy Keane, that paid dividends for both, bringing Man U to the top. Aston Villa could reap the benefit. And Barry could find his way to the English squad.

Fifa's vice-president, Jack Warner may face expulsion from football's world governing body for his role in the World Cup ticket scandal. In their executive committee meeing in Zurich on friday FIFA will be making an enquiry into the role played by Warner. He has been identified in a report by the auditors Ernst & Young as having sold World Cup tickets at up to four times their face value. It has been claimed that the Trinidad & Tobago official made at least £500,000 by trading in the tickets.
On monday morning - Warner- speaking at the opening ceremony of the six-day FIFA Futuro III Referee Instructors’ Course being conducted at the Dr Joao Havelange Centre of Excellence, Macoya had some stern words to say about the standards of refereeing in the region and about financial integrity.
“In fact some our referees have been mercenaries and most times all they are concerned with is how much they can earn for officiating the game and they care very little about their performance on the field.” he said.
Now there's a bit of irony in this somewhere...

Der Spiegel has a great article on how Jose Mourinho strips away your ego as a player and makes you into a machine performing for Chelsea. It is in German, so I'll give you the broad talking points.

This is Michael Ballack's transformation from preening German superstar to just another player doing Mourinho's bidding.

In the article Ballack has been reported to be in reverence of Chelsea owner, Roman Abramovich and coach Jose Mourinho. In Germany, Ballack was always pegged as somewhat aloof and a player who was respectful of authority. Probably befitting his East German upbringing. However, the more familiar he got with the system in the Bundesliga, the more he realized that there were too many preening coaches and vain players. Most Germans believed that greed played a big part in Ballacks transfer, as Uli Hoeness put it bluntly, but Ballack is too intelligent a player and realized that the Bundesliga had its limitations. Mourinho also seems to have struck a chord in Ballack in their meetings before his signing on.

Ballack is also very acutely aware of why he has been brought on to Chelsea. Not to win the Premiership. Been there, done that. Jose Mourinho is gunning for the Champions League. Mourinho is a martinet. Ballack can no longer wear his hair long. As with every Chelsea player, he now sports close cropped hair. He says of his transformation (only about a month long but then it only puts Mourinho's forceful personality in context), that he no longer looks in the mirror like other German players and is ready to play football.

The article also pits Mourinho and Abramovich as soulmates. Both having fought authoritarian regimes. Mourinho loves his role as a coach, comparing himself gleefully with Don Corleone, the Mafia boss from the Hollywood film "The Godfather", and he calls his squad "the family." An aspect that Ballack learned when Drogba scored that great second goal against Blackburn. There were no overt celebrations. Drogba had fulfilled Mourinho's duty, and that was the only thing required.

Michael Ballack opened his account for Chelsea by scoring a penalty kick. It must have been good old times for Ballack, if there is one club he has punished over the years, it must be Werder Bremen.

Anyways, the German tabloids were full of how the game was gifted to the Blues. The Bild called Werder stupid for gifting the game away. They could not believe how Pasanen lost the ball to Essien. The bloody Finn!

Bayern%20Munich.jpg

It is measure of the newfound nationalistic pride in Germans that while Chelsea beat Werder Bremen, a defeat that would have caused much angst and soul searching before, the mood changed when Bayern crushed Spartak Moscow, 4-0. The Bild and Der Spiegel were pretty delirious.

The moment we were all waiting for came when Alan Pardew finally brought out Carlos Tevez, in the 61st minute in place of Marlon Harewood. Suddenly, the Hammers looked dangerous, with Carlitos showing that nifty footwork and speed that he is famous for. Anyways, the Hammers love him already. We now await Javier Mascherano's debut.

Aston Villa looks like a club that is going to be very tough to beat. Gareth Berry, Stephen Davis, and Stilian Petrov, were the pick of the players. Martin O'Neill has done a fantastic job with his team.

Bobby Zamora scored his fifth goal in four games to give the Hammers the tie. The Hammers were lucky that they were not three goals down due to great saves by Anton Ferdinand and then Tyrone Mears highlight of the game, the goal line save that kept a sure Petrov goal away.

There was a Kia Joorabchian sighting, as he checked out his new acquisitions for West Ham. I have seen Kia in TV clips pictures and and I can tell you he does not change his expression too much.

Oligarkh: The movie on Boris Berezovsky or Platon Elenin

A movie loosely based on Boris Berezovsky who changed his name to Platon Elenin based on a character called Platon in the movie. Berezovsky has been in the news recently, as he is rumoured to be behind the negotiations to buyout West Ham, a story that Soccerblog has extensively covered >>

The plot summary:

During the Gorbachev years, Platon Makovski and his four buddies are university students who jump on the private capitalism movement. Fast-forward 20 years, Platon finds himself the richest man in Russia, having sacrificed his friends to get to the top. But with this cynical rise, comes a brutal fall.

The plot is off the mark: Actually the oligarchs were all created by Boris Yeltsin's penny sales of Russian investments to 23 people in 1994, and Anatoly Chubais, the guru of privatization, who did not introduce measures to allow or encourage ordinary Russians to invest in their own companies, in those years.

Guus Hiddink: Not an impressive debut against Croatia

| Comments | TrackBacks

The Roman Abramovich bankrolled Guus Hiddink era began in less than spectacular style as Russia was held to a draw by a decimated Croatia, 0-0.

" As much as six leaders of Croatia’s football, including Darijo Srna, Ivica Olić and Boško Balaban, didn’t play that day because of the wounds, disqualification or dismissal from the team for breaking the discipline. "

I don't know who is editing the English version of Kommersant but I would urge Kia Joorabchian, Boris Berezovsky and Badri Patarkatsishvili to find someone better.

Meanwhile, it is now becoming evident that Guus Hiddink will probably replace Jose Mourinho, when he leaves Stamford Bridge to move onto either coaching the Portugese National Team in time for the 2010 World Cup, a move that will legitimize his standing as a world class coach, and not just a club manager.

The rumblings begin. Spain's woes keep getting worse, a downward spiral that began in the World Cup, after getting beat by France. At that time Aragones was reported to have considered resigning or even retiring but he stayed on.

David Healy scored a hat trick in a match that shattered Spain, 3-2 and Aragones feeling the heavy breathing of the Spanish Football Federation, at the back of his neck. Healy showed that he is an equal opportunity offender as he scored the matchwinner against England last year, in the World Cup qualifier.

The result has left Aragones, who saw his side crash out of the World Cup finals in the second round, fearing for his future.

"I would not be surprised if the Spanish federation looked at this result and considered my position," the glum-faced coach said.

The best new signing in the Premiership so far?

Andy%20Johnson.jpg
Andy Johnson, Everton's new signing from Crystal Palace

Portsmouth, Everton, and Aston Villa in the top 5 of the Premiership??? Blackburn 19th, Arsenal 17th, Tottenham 15th, and Liverpool 9th! This season has the table flipped around.

We have not seen Carlos Tevez play yet. He and Javier Mascherano will be unveiled tomorrow, when West Ham take on Aston Villa. However, there is no doubt, that it is Andy Johnson, signed by Everton from Crystal Palace. Johnson scored two goals as Everton capitalized on blunders committed by Liverpool and crushed them 3-0. Rafa Benitez was livid with his team. Pepe Reina, Jamie Carragher, and Sami Hyppia, had miserable games. The Merseyside Derby is usually a Liverpool given.

Best new signing: Top three
1) Andy Johnson- Everton
2) Nwankwo Kanu- Porstmouth
3) Benjani Mwaruwari- Porstmouth

Best coach: Top three
1) Martin O'Neill- Aston Villa : Almost the same team as last season but raised them to a new level. A players coach.
2) Harry Redknapp- Portsmouth: Great new signings and a revamped defence. Sol Campbell has found a new home in Porstmouth and is delivering.
3) David Moyes- Everton: Signed on Andy Johnson, strong belief in Tim Cahill. Lightning fast attack.

Who do you think is the best new singing in the Premiership so far?

The Emirates stadium is not proving to be too lucky for the Gunners. They managed a draw with Middlesborough, 1-1. Arsenal in the last 3 games has developed this disturbing trend towards controlling the ball for 70% of the game, remaining extremely susceptible to counterattacks and not able to finish of chances. Cesc Fabregas is doing very well with his passing but he seems to lack the penetration, and Thierry Henry just does not seem quick enough. The Gunners have lost one and drawn two.

Tottenham lost to Manchester Utd, 1-0, in a game, that they controlled most of the second half. Again, they could not finish. To be fair, the Spurs look like a team with a bunch of new players, trying to get acclimatized to each other, Didier Zokora, Pascal Chimbonda, Mido (not exactly new), and Ledley King (back after a number of months). The Spurs have lost two and won one.

It is too early to get panicky but this year no club can be taken as pushovers. Every win is important. At this stage, it looks like this years Prem might be an extremely tight one.

soccerblog

In South America, it is quite common for football players to be owned not just by their club but companies as well, in percentages similar to a private equity company. This is the case with Carlos Tevez and Javier Mascherano, who are owned by Media Sports Investment (MSI), the company that brought them over to West Ham. This is a trend that will be increasingly seen in football. In a few years, clubs and coaches will have to cede ground to these consortiums in determining the future of these players and the composition of the teams. The devolution of power from country to club to sports agents and now to consortiums owning players in determining a players fate has been a rapid one. Every level cedes just more control to the other. The Carlos Tevez and Javier Mascherano transfer has brought this level to British shores, in an unambiguous way.

Individuals under UEFA rules can only own one club but by forming a consortium, you can circumvent those rules. Even better you can buy stakes in players across many clubs. This allows clubs that could never afford expensive players to bring them over because they will never have to pay outright the whole transfer fee. An MSI type corporation sees a vulnerable club, creates instant credibility by offering stakes in its represented players, in return of partial control of the club. A nice little monopoly is set in motion, and a perfectly legal one at that.

MSI's is now negotiating the buyout of West Ham, and the renting of Carlos Tevez and Javier Mascherano to West Ham, is looked on as bait in buying out the club. Using the term 'bait' might sound strong but essentially that is what the Tevez and Mascherano deal is. The Hammers are making a push to the top echelons with this move after years of indifferent performances.

However, this trend also complicates the traditional sources of tension in a players future, that of club and country, especially as seen in football injuries. Just as an example; the recent flare up between Sir Alex Ferguson and Sven Goran Erickson this summer, in the case of Wayne Rooney's participation in the World Cup due to his ankle injury, will mean an additional level of complexity, if Rooney was partly owned by a consortium like MSI or Tim Cahill of Everton, whose coach, David Moyes got into a nasty spat with the Socceroos over his fitness.

Michael Owen's injury was shrugged off essentially by a very disappointed Glenn Roeder, who sees another difficult year ahead for Newcastle without their marquee player. What if Kia Joorabchian had owned part of Michael Owen, did not accept his injury with Roeder's equanimity, and decided that representing England was not in Owen's best interest. Since the top 5 clubs are financially strong, represent most of the English squad and do not have an MSI like control over their players, this may not be such a problem now.

South Africa Will Not Host the World Cup

We've been hearing reports about the violence in South Africa from our readers for some time now. It seems there's an epidemic of violent crime raging across the country. That's bad enough, but now, I think this news will end South Africa's World Cup hosting chances unless the government wakes up.

I'm talking about the new XTB strain, a virulent form of tuberculosis which has no known treatment. This thing wiped out 52 of 53 HIV-positive patients within 16 days in eastern KwaZulu-Natal province. Wow.

The world community better get on top of this - it's a bigger threat than the "war on terror."

Sadly, the South African Health Minister - Manto Tshabalala-Msimang - is an utter idiot.

After watching her on Nightline a few weeks ago, I was left shaking my head.

She was advocating fresh vegetables as an antidote to HIV-AIDS. See this story.

What's more, Nightline revealed that the health minister and her bosses in the ANC were getting their misinformation from a quack doctor from the USA.

Barack Obama is trying.

The US administration is not. And it's going to come back to hurt us all - if this TB thing isn't contained.

It was a timely reminder that World Cup glory is a distant memory and conquering Asia will not come quickly or easily for a Socceroos team in transition.
The Socceroos need to qualify through Asia to reach the (2010) World Cup and need to figure out how to beat the heat if they don't want to find the the passage too hot to handle.

berezovsky%20badri.jpg
"Hey Badri, let's get Kia to go after West Ham."

So it's finally come to this. A wanted criminal, Boris Berezovsky, protected under British law from extradition to Russia where he is wanted for crimes that range from tax evasion to suspected murder, and plotting Russian president Valdimir Putin's overthrow, might be planning to buyout West Ham United with his business cronies from the Kommersant deal. Kommersant is part of a media empire that Boris Berezovsky ran, during the early days of de-regulating press in Russia. Of course, the usual denials have been put in motion.

Berezovsky is becoming a thorn in Britain's relations with Russia, as even Jack Straw, the former foreign secretary had to come out publicly and denounce Berezovsky's statement “I am aware of the comments made by Mr. Boris Berezovsky in an interview on January 24,” Straw said. “Advocating the violent overthrow of a sovereign state is unacceptable, and I condemn these comments unreservedly.” Straw also warned Berezovsky that the UK government could review his political refugee status.

Boris Berezovsky's partner, Badri Patarkastasishvili, a prominent Georgian businessman, has been touted as the man behind the West Ham negotiations. Patarkastasishvili and Joorabchian acquired Kommersant from Berezovsky in 1999, a move seen as a ploy to divert the Russian's government attention from Berezovsky's assets. Patarkatsishvili is a wanted man in Russia, and is suspected of organizing an escape attempt of another of Berezovsky’s companion, former first vice president of Aeroflot airlines Nikolai Glushkov, from custody in 2001.

Kia Joorabchian, the man behind the takeover of the Hammers, and the CEO of Media Sports Investment (MSI), denies that Berezovsky and Patarkatsishivili are behind this takeover, saying that his investors in the West Ham buyout are from the Middle East and bigger than Roman Abramovich.

Joorabchian has refused to reveal who his backers are in bidding for West Ham, an East London club with a large and loyal fan base. He insists that neither Berezovsky nor Patarkatsishvili -- who, as owner of Georgian club Dynamo Tbilisi is barred under FIFA rules from owning another club -- are behind his bid. Joorbachian is widely known as the owner of the Corinthians, the Brazilian club that Carlos Tevez and Javier Mascherano were bought from to play for West Ham. However it is well known that the men behind the Corinthian buyout are none other than Berezovsky and Patarkastasishvili. In an article published in Britain's Telegraph newspaper on Thursday, Patarkatsishvili is revealed as the end beneficiary of MSI Holdings, which owns MSI Brazil, and has 100 percent rights on Tevez and 50 percent of Mascherano. The other half is held by Globo, a Brazilian television company.

Joorabchian is perceived as nothing more than a front, a shell, to make deals more palatable for Berezovsky and Patarkatsishvili. In fact, Kommersant is still believed to be in the hands of Berezovsky. Raf Shakirov, who was the chief editor of Kommersant when Joorabchian was introduced as the paper's owner in July 1999, said he had no doubt then that the Iranian was "an intermediary."

"He behaved like a person acting on others' behalf, for those who prefer to steer from behind the scenes," Shakirov said Tuesday. "It was clear from the first that Berezovsky was behind it."

Berezovsky and Patarkatsishvili were spotted in the crowd during Sunday's game in London between Brazil and Argentina, next to another business partner of Berezovsky's -- Neil Bush, the brother of U.S. President George W. Bush.

They were obviously checking out their new investments, Carlos Tevez and Javier Mascherano in action, who are under contract to MSI.

The Carlos Tevez and Javier Mascherano signings were brokered by the Israeli football agent Pini Zahavi, a friend of Kia Joorabchian. He is the mother of all agents, who introduced Roman Abramovich and Alexander Gaydamak to Chelsea and Portsmouth. Zahavi is the future of football, a future that has no place for club, coach, or player. Are you a financially strapped club, with little to no chance of ever winning a title? Contact Pini Zahavi, and he will get in touch with investors willing to buy out your club. Do you want a coach? Or players on rent, who can get you a title? Get in touch with Zahavi.

As The Times, a pro-business paper, cautions, " The question, then, is not whether more speculators will arrive on these shores but what type. Will they be Glazers, seeking to count the pounds and pence, or Abramovichs? Will they be sons of suspected arms dealers, like Gaydamak, or the offspring of Kent car dealers like Joorabchian? We do not know yet what Randy Lerner has in mind for Aston Villa, but whatever the motives of the new owners, there is nothing apart from a criminal record that can stop them coming in. "

If it is revealed that Kia Joorabchian is a front for Boris Brezovsky and Badri Patarkatsishvili and that West Ham is being bought by funds that are laundered, then the FA, the club authorities, and the fans should deny this takeover, even if it means that Carlos Tevez and Javier Mascherano may not be part of the Hammers. Hopefully, words like honourable still count for something in the commodified world of football.

This Kick It Out interview with Sol Campbell is rather pedestrian, but it does tell you about Arsenal's strategy and how they became one of the most "global" teams, if you will, in the global game.

"Arsenal are involved in a lot of community projects that link into schools. It’s very important for people to feel the club is part of their community. I’ve been involved in a school and community project in King’s Cross, north London. It does lift people if players and the club get involved in the community. Everyone feels part of something. The club is helping the community and in return it might get more supporters. That’s the beauty of football, it crosses boundaries and breaks down barriers. It’s great to see a good mix of people enjoying football. That’s why I love being a part of it."

Pity Campbell had to move on to Portsmouth, but he's already made a real difference for them.

Gallas in self goal ruckus

| Comments | TrackBacks

After Chelsea acquired Ashley Cole in part-exchange for William Gallas the club alleged that Gallas threatened to score an own goal or get himself sent off if selected for Chelsea’s opening game of the season against Manchester City.If true Gallas may well have scored the mother of all self goals....
However Gallas has denied the claims and accused Chelsea of 'lacking class'.
And PFA chief executive Gordon Taylor has supported the French defender, insisting that the whole affair was entirely unnecessary.

"Why do they have to wash their dirty linen in public? I do not see what purpose it serves," said Taylor. All the mud slinging is just making football a dirtier game

Why would anyone want Zidane's sweaty jersey?

| 3 Comments | TrackBacks

Now the truth is told. Materazzi did not want Zidane's jersey, the one that he kept tugging, and one that Zidane offered. Zidane walked into this one. He was asking to be hurt. And Materazzi, having seen his share of sweaty jerseys, declined the offer and came up with one of his own. He preferred Zidane's sister.

Materazzi is not a bad looking guy and Zidane's sister might be easy on the eye too (I have not seen her but with Zidane's decent looking mug, good looks might run in their family), and in some other circumstances, they might have made an attractive couple. But seriously, the World Cup final is no place to ask for a date. Bad move on Materazzi's part. However, Zidane could have just politely rejected Materazzi's overtures to his sister.

More interestingly is that Materazzi's revelation takes the sting away from the French public's reaction to the whole headbutt affair. Many French fans although supportive of Zidane's action, might now be wondering why this was such a big deal. Even I thought this was a much bigger deal, even expressing that Materazzi was getting away with racial epithets.

Materazzi obviously calculated statement before this very important game, might have the French fans reconsider that lightning strike down the accursed Azzurris, focusing on the game, and not so much the freakshow that this became during the World Cup. This game is very important to both, as Italy have been struggling under new coach Robert Donadoni, and eked out a draw against Lithuania. France is looking to cement its place as the best European team in the post Zidane era.

Giacinto Facchetti died yesterday. A giant amongst the Azzurris and an Inter Milan stalwart, who played all 634 games scoring 75 goals. He committed very few fouls “because football should be fun and I never wanted to hurt opponents”, even the ones who gave him a hard time because they were quicker off the mark (the first time).

France vs Italy: Who will headbutt Materazzi this time?

The French are looking for a bit of payback. Maybe we can see different anatomical parts being used. The everything butt but headbutt; the kneebutt, elbowbutt, buttbutt, tonguebutt (OK, stop it Gerd, you are getting carried away).

William Gallas: A wall: Physical, versatile, and a great tackler. The attack has to go around him. Can play anywhere in defence. Scores critical goals too. Big reason for Chelsea's stingy defense. Low key. Should definitely appreciate the French flavour in Arsenal.

Ashley Cole: Speed: A position specialist, and a creator. Good at starting counterattacks. The Joe Cole- Ashley Cole duo down the left, along with Owen Hargreaves were the few bright sparks in the England attack this World Cup. High maintenance.

The Prem is on Euro watch and action begins with all the exciting new signings, the next weekend. The Cole saga is finally over and a fierce debate has broken out on who got the better deal: Arsenal or Chelsea. Either way, another bit of bad blood, between the two clubs. I am biased, I think Gallas is a far better player than Ashley Cole and £5m is a nice bit of change to go with it. Wenger outplayed Mourinho, no question on transfer day. I hope this translates onto the field. Either way, look for Ashley Cole to get a warm welcome when he visits the Emirates. I don't think Ms Tweedy will be there either.

Foul: Andrew Jennings book exposes FIFA

| 1 Comment | TrackBacks

Foul.jpg

Andrew Jennings's book gives us the scoop on how Sepp Blatter became president and how FIFA awards World Cups.

soccerblog

Velapan.jpg

In 2007, FIFA has their presidential elections, and Sepp Blatter, the present FIFA president is running again. Sepp Blatter has made more waves with his cronyism and his questionable business dealings, than any noteworthy contribution to soccer during his tenure as president. See Andrew Jennings excellent coverage of the FIFA president in the Beebs 'Panorama.'

Unfortunately, Peter Velappan, the one candidate who would have made a huge difference in the world of soccer, is retiring in 2007, from his post of Secretary General of the Asian Football Confederation. He has had an exemplary life as a soccer administrator for more than 40 years, both as an honest official and as a visionary, putting Asian soccer up on the map.

The development of top-level football in the region has been hampered by widespread corruption, lack of organization and the physical size of most of the players. But perhaps the most damaging blow is a constituency so large and culturally diverse that any attempt at proper administration, never mind a quorum, has until recently been a maddening and fruitless endeavor.

When Velappan joined the AFC in 1954, there were only twelve countries in the confederation. Now there are 45 countries spread over 11 time zones, from Lebanon to Guam.

Not only is there a recent history of conflict between some of the members (Vietnam and China, and India and Pakistan, for instance), hostility in some cases stretches back centuries. Throw in A-list pariahs such as Myanmar, North Korea, Iran and Iraq, and it is remarkable that there have been so few international incidents - or that some teams have not carried assault rifles on to the playing fields. Israel and Syria were in the same Asian Confederation till Israel moved out of the AFC in 1972.

"I can't deny that this diversity was a problem and challenge when I first came to the job 20 years ago," says Velappan. "We have half the world's population, and no confederation has the logistical problems we do. It took us over 10 years to strike a good balance and focus the attention back on football." A veteran of many acrimonious and exasperating meetings, Velappan enjoys pointing out that football has done more for Asian harmony than any government or diplomatic counsel could ever manage. "We brought Iran and Iraq together after the war," he says. "It wasn't easy, but we did it. We also brought North Korea and South Korea together on the football pitch, as well as Yemen and Saudi Arabia."

Velappan was the co-ordinator of the 2002 World Cup and the tournament director. The World Cup was spread over with matches played in South Korea and Japan, two countries who have had a contentious history. This was the first time that the World Cup was held in Asia. A potential logistical nightmare with matches held in two countries in twenty different venues. However, the World Cup went off smoothly with very few glitches, and in doing so, provided the world with some wonderful soccer by Senegal, Turkey, and even the USA. The semifinals, pitted two world powers, Brazil and Germany versus relative minnows South Korea and Turkey. For Asian soccer it was a triumph as South Korea and Japan both did well.

Velappan also heads Vision Asia, a program devoted to popularizing soccer and closing the gap in standards between Asian soccer and the rest of the world by addressing eleven key disciplines that include the associations, marketing, grassroots, coach training, refereeing, sports medicine, men‘s competitions, women’s competitions, futsal, media and fans.

As the Project Director of Vision Asia, Velappan’s time is now dedicated to development work and to a cause that he truly believes in. “With 3.7 billion people, how can we go wrong? We are going through one of the best periods in Asian football and we must take advantage of the momentum created by Korea and Japan in the 2002 FIFA World Cup. I coined the phrase ‘The Future is Asia’ and I am convinced of it.”

As Socceroo fans, we have Peter Velappan to thank, as he was instrumental in getting Australia's admission into the tougher Asian Zone, from the much weaker Oceanic Zone. A move that has only strengthened soccer in Australia. We are no longer the laughing stock in Europe in running up scores against Western Samoa, now that we have to play tougher teams like Iran, South Korea, Saudi Arabia, and Japan.

In all the hullaballoo of West Ham being taken over by Kia Joorabchian, in most likelihood, a proxy for Roman Abramovich, the name Boris Berezovsky is bandied about quite a bit. Who is Berezovsky? He is Abramovich's partner in their company, Sibneft, now called Gazprom Neft, one of Russia's biggest oil producing and refinining companies. Sibneft through the process of perestroika, was auctioned of to private investors. He is also a partner along with Abramovich, in Kia Joorabchian's Media Sports Investment (MSI), the company negotiating with West Ham in a buyout of the club. MSI also controls Brazilian club Corinthians, Carlos Tevez and Javier Mascherano's former club before joining West Ham. Sibneft also owns CSKA Moscow, Russia's largest and most succesful football club.

When Boris Berezovsky left Russia, he sold most of his oil and media interests to his protégé Roman Abramovich.

Roman Abramovich and Boris Berezovsky acquired shares in Sibneft by bidding in the auctions through several front companies that they set up for the purpose. These transactions, widely denounced as unethical or illegal, were approved by Boris Yeltsin who had good relations with Berezovsky and Abramovich at that time. According to General Alexander Korzhakov, former chief of Yeltsin's security service, Abramovich manages finances for Yeltsin and his family.

Boris Berezovsky, is also the most notorious of the thirteen oligarchs that Boris Yeltsin sold the Russian industrial sector to. He made his name by employing criminals from the Chechen gangs and forming an alliance with the Solnetsevo Brotherhood, a Moscow based Mafia gang, to capture the auto market, through his company AutoVaz, an auto manufacturer. His biggest rival, Valeri Dlugatch of Trinity Motors, was murdered by Chechen gangsters. He also controlled Aeroflot, Russia's airline

With the collapse of the Soviet Union in 1991, Chechnya, the most deregulated of the former provinces, became a hotbed for criminal activities, as many prison inmates were released. Grozny became a haven for drug smuggling, gun running, money laundering, assassinations of gang members, and kidnapping of rival businessmen, and officials. Under cover of paying ransom Berezovsky was financing their illegal activities.

With the blessing of Anatoly Chubais, the finance minister, and the architect of Russia's privatization, Berezovsky also moved to the lucrative TV and media market. In 1994, in just a few weeks he secured control of Channel 1 of the Russian TV, he purchased Channel 6 -privatized with the participation of Ted Turner, and purchased Ogoniok and the journal Nezavissimaia Gazeta, becoming one of the most influential men in the Russian media universe

In becoming one of the biggest media moghul, he used his influence with Boris Yeltsin, to diminish another rival oligarch in media, Vladimir Gussinski, and owner of NTV, revealing that Gussinski along with Moscow mayor Yuri Luchkov nursed political ambitions to unseat the Russian government. Due to Berezovsky's disclosure, Luchkov had to go into exile. Sometime later, Yuri Listiev, a prominent anchorman was murdered for expressing his unhappiness with the way Boris Berezovsky was restructuring the Russian media. Berezovsky became the focus of a criminal inquiry but no charges could be bought against him. He was also accused of ordering the assassination attempt on his longtime rival Vladimir Gussinski.

Boris Yeltsin then appointed Berezovsky deputy secretary of the National Security Council, then secretary of the Organization for Coordinating the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS.). In a effort to boost his own political credentials, Berezovsky took part in the peace talks with the Chechen rebels and Moscow, using his influence with the Chechen leaders, Aslan Maskadov, Salim Raduiev, and Shamil Basayev, during the Chechen insurgency, all the time wilfully slowing down the process according to General Alexander Lebed, who signed the peace treat with Chechen leader, Aslan Maskadov.

Berezovsky's alliance with the Chechen rebels, depended on the continuation of the insurgency, a relationship successfully exploited in the past. The peace talks had very little to do with alleviating the miserable conditions in war torn Grozny or even preventing terrorist attacks in Moscow and everything to do to protect the proposed Baku- Tbilisi- Ceyhan oil pipeline through the Caucasus. A megadeal that the European, Russian, and the US governments were very interested in as it would mean billions of dollars to their oil companies including BP Amoco, ExxonMobil, Chevron, Lukoil, Yukos, TotalFina, and Elf amongst many other beneficiaries.

Boris Berezovsky's fortunes took a turn for the worse when Valdimir Putin came to power. He initially supported Putin's bid for elections but soon realized that he was not as pliable as Yeltsin. Putin had his own ideas of remaking the Russian economy seeing the oligarchs as a group of self serving businessman less interested in the economy and more interested in lining their pockets. The oligarchs were also very close to US political and economic interests, using them as leverage against the Putin government. Berezovsky fled to the US and then sought refuge in England as a political exile in 2000, and in his new capacity has become a liberal defender of Russia's democratic reforms, and a critic of the Putin government that he denounces as authoritarian (read does not bow to the US and England). The British government has refused to extradite him although he is wanted in Russia for charges as diverse as money laundering to murder. In 2003, in spite of all charges presented against him, Boris Berezovski tried to run as candidate for the Russian Parliament (Duma), but his plans failed. Recently, he changes his name and last name and at present he is known as Platón Elenin. This new name of the character bears great significance given the fact that it is the name of a oligarch character in a play written in Russia.

These oligarchs have become heroes in the US and Britain, as shining examples of Russia's new capitalism, especially Mikhail Khodorovsky, the chairman of the Yukos oil company, Russia's second largest oil company, basically bequeathed to him by Boris Yeltsin for a throwaway price, and now jailed by Vladimir Putin for millions of dollars in tax evasion. His imprisonment is always made much of by another oilman, Dick Cheney, as evidence that he is a victim of Putin's authoritarian democracy. Dick Cheney also puts on the suit of USA's vice president, when he can get away from protecting the interests of the oil and energy lobby and shooting old men in their face.

The process by which Roman Abramovich and Boris Berezovsky, criminals by any other name and their interest in buying out English and other football clubs, is one of legitimizing their money, and consequently their name. In England, where football is followed with a passion, is an everyman's sport, the easiest way to whitewash your name is to become the game's saviour. There are many clubs in financial straits, who'll never see a championship in their lifetime, unless they are bailed out by the Abramovich's and the Berzovsky's. Fans, for the most part, really don't care too much about where the money is coming from, or even if they do, it is a small dent in their conscience when they finally win that trophy. With all this, we should bury the myth of football, the beautiful game. In five years time Roman Abramovich and Bruce Berezovsky will be given the OBE, for their service to English football, and their turnaround will be complete.

Human memory is not only short, it is fickle. It is astounding how Chelsea have inveigled themselves into the English psyche as a football dynasty. Four years ago, Chelsea was a middle rung Premiership team, struggling with their finances, with a rather bare trophy room.

Then came Roman Abramovich, and as legend has it, while on a plane, he flew over the Chelsea grounds, observed the empty playing field, and in that serendipitious moment, decided to buy Chelsea. A virtually bankrupt club put up no defence, and it was sold to Abramovich for £60 million by Ken Bates.

For the first time, serious money (over £100 million was spent) was pumped into player acquisition. At that time nobody gave the Blues a chance to succeed, but they did, then taking the runner up spot in 2003. This was not enough for Abramovich and he fired Claudio Rainieri, bringing in Jose Mourinho, and went on another looting spree for players. No amount of money was high enough. In three years, Abramovich has spent over £250 million in buying players. You can buy Arsenal for that amount. It paid off; Chelsea walked off the last two years, with the Premiership title.

Now from all the comments, we hear the same disbelieving noises that West Ham cannot do it, from the same Chelsea fans, a club that was in the doldrums not too long ago. A reality check is in order. Lets put this in context, at this point, Abramovich would never dream of buying out Chelsea, it is far too expensive and over-valued. As for Man U, Liverpool, and Arsenal fans who trot out how little West Ham is, and does not compare to the rich and storied traditions of their clubs with their bursting trophy rooms, let me tell you people like Roman Abramovich and Kia Joorbachian care not one fig about that history. They will tell you that history does not win you future Premiership titles. You can go home, put that in your pipes and smoke it.

Arsenal's Brazilians: The way to go

| 5 Comments | TrackBacks

baptista.jpgbaptista_julio.jpg

Brazil in one way or another has never really seen the English League as a stop for showcasing their soccer skills. The League was rightly proud of the number of players it produced who made it to their national squads in this World Cup. Out of 734 players spread over 32 teams, the EL comprised 107 players, the most of any league. The Bundesliga was a distant second with approximately 70 players. However when it came to representing the Brazilian squad, the EL was spared the blushes only through Gilberto Silva of Arsenal. The Bundesliga and the French League had 3 each and the Brazilian League had two. Most of the other players came from the La Liga and the Serie.

Brazilians have long shunned the English League. Edu, the Brazilian midfielder signed by Arsenal had a shortlived stay. Now Arsenal seems to be have taken the lead again and have signed on Julio Baptista from Real Madrid in a swap deal with former Arsenal midfielder Jose Antonio Reyes. Arsenal also signed U-20 Sao Paolo player Denilson. Arsenal already have Gilberto Silva, Brazilian midfielder, representing his national squad.

The only other Brazilian players that play in the EPL are defender Fabio Aurelio of Liverpool and midfielder Fabio Rochemback of Middlesborough. So amongst the 20 Premiership teams with approximately 30 players on the roster (600 players), the Brazilians only account for five

With Arsenal signing on Julio Baptista at the behest of fellow Brazilian teammate, Gilberto Silva, following that with young talent, Denilson, the indication is that Brazilians are beginning to find that the English League is worth exploring again.

Football players should be seen and not heard. Moyes might be sueing Rooney for defamation

What is with these football players? Look we love the way you play the game but please don't make your coaches the fall guys, when all you want is a bit more quid and a spotlight.

As for Rooney, hearing him speak about the English debacle at the World Cup was painful. He is not the brightest spark. Why anyone would give him a book deal is beyond me?? This season has been painful enough with all the dirt that Ashley Cole, Wayne Rooney, and Frank Lampard's literary disasters have dished out. The only book that makes any substantive points are that in Steven Gerrard's book.

RomanAbramovich1.jpgKia%20Joorabchian.jpg
Is Roman Abramovich (L) negotiating West Ham's takeover? Kia Joorbachian (R)

West Ham shocked everybody in the soccer world by signing on Carlos Tevez and Javier Mascherano. How did these two big names spurn the bigger clubs like Arsenal and Manchester United? The move is closely tied to the takeover negotiations of West Ham by British born businessman Kia Joorabchian, the 32 year old head of Media Sports Investment and the owner of Corinthians, the Sao Paulo based soccer club, Tevez and Mascherano played before joining the Hammers. Kia Joorbachian had drawn immediate comparisons to Roman Abramovich.

What is more intriguing is that Joorbachian might actually be a frontman for Roman Abramovich, Chelsea's owner, and his business partner, Boris Berzovsky, another Russian oligarch, fleeing Russian authorities on money laundering charges, both of whom are also stakeholders in MSI. It is no secret that Abramovich has been looking into making a foray into the lucrative South American market buying out many mostly bankrupt soccer clubs in Latin and Central America, without drawing attention to his name and the mostly negative reaction that he draws. Joorabchian immediately pumped $35 million into player acquisition, and spirited away Tevez, from arch rivals Boca Juniors and Mascherano from River Plate, before they could make their move to the La Liga or Serie like many other Brazilian and Argentinian stars do.

This summer was rife with speculation that Tevez and Mascherano would move to the Premiership to the big clubs, especially Man U. Corinthians are dead bottom in the Brazilian league and Tevez and his family have been harrassed by disgruntled fans. However, till recently, there was no reports by Tevez and Mascherano to move to England, and in fact, Joorabchian, had convinced them to stay on in Corinthians. The volte face by Tevez and Mascherano in joining West Ham and the takeover negotiations seems to have Abramovich's fingerprints over this one too.

The FA should be careful that companies like MSI don't become de facto heads of the English League. The last thing you need is a corporation with match and price fixing capabilities.

soccerblog

Carlos Tevez and Javier Mascherano come to West Ham, Kanu is on fire at Portsmouth, Aston Villa is being marshalled by maestro Martin O'Neill, Everton is climbing up the ranks with Andy Johnson, and gangly and slow Shola Ameobi at Newcastle is showing that good things happen when he gets his long legs on the ball. Wigan have Valencia and now Graham Kavanagh. Newly promoted Reading with Leroy Lita are proving to be no pushovers.

Last weekend, I saw the Blues struggle against Blackburn, in a 2-0 win. It was Andre Ooijer, the new Rover acquisition, in an awful debut, gave the game away to the Blues on both occasions, due to mental meltdowns. Lampard scored through a penalty, after Ooijer draped himself over Terry in the box, and then Drogba muscled his way past a sprawling Ooijer for a splendid goal. But before all of this happened, the Blues were playing with 10 disjointed men on the field. Only Petr Cech looked sharp. Chelsea's midfield is going through a population explosion, with Ballack, Lampard, and Essien clogging up the field.

Arsenal played Manchester City and lost for the first time in 19 encounters with City. They did everything except put the ball into the net. Beautiful pretty passes all strung in a row with the finesse of E Jogo Bonito but when it came to the actual execution, the Gunners failed. Thierry Henry, usually automatic, must have got at least 4 good looks at goal and failed. Arsenal is still searching for its first win. They have made news for all the wrong reasons.

Liverpool has had a indifferent start to the season, with a squeaker against Sheffield United. Manchester United have had an impressive start to their season but tougher times lie ahead with the new players that other clubs have managed to get. Meanwhile all those Owen Hargreaves rumours have finally been put to rest. Bayern Munich managed to pull the wool over Sir Alex by signing Mark Van Bommel and keeping Hargreaves on for at least another 6 months if not the whole season.

This Premiership season is wide open. It could be West Ham, Aston Villa, Everton, Portsmouth, at the end of the season. Good times for these small clubs and a boost for those who despair of dynasties.

Vituperative is a mild description of the average Mancs reaction to the greedy overlords across the pond. More gallingly, is that the Glazers took a club that was doing well financially, with solid albeit modest gains, and more importantly, no outstanding dues. With his takeover, Man U became an Argentinian bail out situation with massive debt borrowing. Even the World Bank would have been chagrined at this deal and washed their hands off the whole thing. Man U now has to rake in gate recepits at a clip that will just about make it solvent with the hope that wealthier donors will write off their debt in a Paris Club like situation.

Mention Chelsea and you will find out that many Premiership fans get their knickers in a twist. In their eyes, the Blues have bought their way to the Premiership titles twice in a row, and when you hear that the total amount in players fees is larger than the New York Yankees roster, it is hard to argue against such a perception. When you have someone like Roman Abramovich willing to underwrite every folly that Chelsea commits, some of which would have landed other successful clubs on the financial ropes, we are seeing nothing but soccer as a commodity.

It is easy to see why these two clubs engender such strongly negative reactions to most in the soccer world unless of course you are a debt collector or a Blues fan who suffered the comatose teams of the 70's, 80's, and the 90's. The last time the Blues won a league title before they won in 2005 was in 1955, a full half century ago. To put this in context, this was before Ghana got its independence. Chelsea was before Abramovich and Mourinho, in every sense a middling club. The takeover of Manchester United is even more inexplicable. Clearly, it was a club that did not really need any financial help and was doing swimmingly well in almost every facet of the soccer world. Glazer's takeover also does not seem to have brought any tangible success in soccer performance but that maybe because Man U had already set the bar so high.

So why is it that Portsmouth's takeover by another whimsical Russian businessman, Alexandre Gaydamak, this season, bring out the feel good vibes? Who can explain the relief felt by Aston Villa fans, when their club was bought out by Randy Lerner, an American businessman, and the CEO of a credit card company, that makes millions of dollars in atrociously high late fees. His takeover was greeted by grateful Villa fans, who see him as a saviour.

The reason is simple. In these clubs there is an element of control that is retained with the fans, the real patrons of the game of soccer. They are the ones that give soccer its canvas, so that the players and managers can play the game with bold strokes, Portsmouth is a small club, that never made it to the Premiership till the year 2004, a dozen years after the EPL's inception. The story of how it got there is the big story, because Portsmouth is a twice bought over club. The club was in financial ruin and was at best a first division club constantly battling relegation. In 1999, Milan Mandaric, a self made Serbian American millionaire bought out the club and saved it from bankruptcy. The climb back in league ranking was fairly rapid but it still took them 4 years to get to the Premiership stage, in 2003 with Harry Redknapp at the helm, a year that saw them finish a very respectable 13th with an excellent home record. However, Harry Redknapp, resigned the next year because of differences with Mandarich, but Portsmouth still made it to the Premiership, under interim coach, Velimir Zajec and then Alan Perrin. On May 15, 2005, the last day of the Premiership, West Bromwich Albion’s 2-0 win in their final game over Portsmouth meant WBA and Portsmouth escaped relegation at the expense of arch rival, Southampton. Redknapp was installed again in late 2005 after a stint as manager of arch rivals Southampton, when Portsmouth went into a mid season swoon before pulling out of relegation under him. This transfer season was busy with many rumours, from Gianluca Zambrotta to David Trezeguet, joining Pompey with the tabloids agog that under Gaydamak, Portsmouth was going to become another globalization venture, like Chelsea. Instead, Pompey hired the services of time tested veterans David James, Andy Cole, Sol Campbell, and Nwankwo Kanu. English soccer fans are familiar with these players, many who have played for their clubs. Portsmouth also played their nucleus of players that had got them thus far to the Premiership. Pablo Mendes and Svetoslav Todorov, without jettisoning them as has beens. The result is that Portsmouth, although very early in the season, is sitting in 5th place after pasting, Blackburn Rovers and their tough defence, 3-0 in their opening game. They managed to draw Manchester City, 0-0 inspite Ben Thatcher's hit job on Pablo Mendes.

The Pompey fans loved Mike Mandarich and they see him as the architect of their recent fortunes. When he stepped down, they kept him on as a co-owner of Portsmouth. What is equally important is that Portsmouth has gone about rebuilding their team with talented players, who have been top of the rung, but not neccessarily superstars. Unlike Chelsea, if Alexandre Gaydamak, can quietly build Portsmouth with quality players without the pressure of a price tag, and an emphasis on English players, with a necessary amount of faith in their skills, even through indifferent spells, a different sort of takeover model could be created, more acceptable to larger group of English fans, perhaps feeling rightly cynical about the way English clubs seem to be taken over by merchants expert at commodification, with no clue and very little knowledge about soccer.

Aston Villa was a club that was undergoing severe financial stress, under an unpopular owner, Doug Ellis, and an even more unpopular manager, David O'Leary. When buy out talks began, there were four consortiums mentioned including the bid of Athole Still, who represented Sven Goran Erickson. In an infamous set up Erickson was caught on tape relishing the prospect of managing Aston Villa, after its reported buyout by oil rich Arab sheikhs. He went onto suggest that he could do this while also managing England. Even the bid by a bonafide longtime supporter of Aston Villa, Michael Neville, was supported somewhat lukewarmly by Villa fans. That is because Neville had to come up with the money through a consortium of other interested parties. Villa fans had probably seen enough damage done to Manchester United, with an owner who had to mortagage everything and anything to own the club leaving it to happenstance for its future development, because the interest itself eats away into any profit that the club makes. When Randy Lerner came knocking the second time around to acquire Villa with his own money, Villa fans knew it was the real deal. Lerner did not have to go to the World Bank, to any bank, or to any money lender, to borrow to buyout Villa. Equally important was that his bid was very closely tied to Martin O'Neill, Villa's new coach continuing on in his new job. Ask any soccer pundit and he is most likely to say that O'Neill is probably the best coach in England today. O'Neill's forte is that he can take emerging talent and make them play to their potential. In that, Villa can transfer untested players who have great talent and come relatively cheap, but in the process develop under O'Neill's tutelage, to make stellar contributions to the club. Randy Lerner, unlike many of the new overseas owners (read Yanks) knows his soccer and unlike Malcolm Glazer, has already become a familiar figure to Villa fans, who hail him boisterously, when he visits. Aston Villa is already reaping the rewards and is currently second in the league. Is anyone grinding their teeth and cussing out Villa? No. Maybe it is too early, but even if Villa finishes as strong as it started the season, it would be difficult to begrudge them their success. Unlike the Mancs, whose opposition to the Glazer takeover was voted down by the governing board, and led to thousands disenchanted by the new club, the Villa fans see this change as neccessary to revive the fortunes of their long suffering club. The enchantment is that the fans themselves have been responsible for the change in their club.

A testimonial to Milan Mandaric

"Gaydamak may now be the sole owner of Pompey, but the name of Milan Mandaric will go down in history. He had his tantrums, he had his ego, but where would Portsmouth Football Club be without Milan Mandaric.

Milan - I salute you. Thank you for putting us where we are today - the Pompey spirit lives on, in the Premiership."
