Puerta's funeral was attended by his friends who grew up together playing in the Sevilla youth system Sergio Ramos, Jesus Navas, and Kepa Blanco. The current coach of Atletico Bilbao, Joaquin Caparros, who gave Puerta his debut in the senior squad while he was the Sevilla coach also was in attendance. More than 20,000 fans showed up to bid farewell to Puerta.
