Adebayor: "I'm not here for the cash"

Adebayor moves to City. A five year deal, worth £25 million to Arsenal.

I think Adebayor and Tevez hired the same PR person. It would have been refreshingly honest, if just for once they said it was all about the money. But on cue its never about that.

"People who think that I have joined City for the money are wrong," he asserted. "If I had made a move for that reason then I would have been playing for Barcelona or Milan last season. They gave me bigger offers than Arsenal did for me to stay."

"I am here because I was impressed by the way the chairman at City spoke to me about the ambition of this club. I want to be part of a club that is aiming to be one of the biggest in the world."

In other words Adebayor spurned Barca and Milan for City. Tevez also gave up Real for City. This is all tied to City becoming one of the biggest clubs in the world. How do these footballers develop such preternatural abilities?

The second statement is an outright embellishment. If that were true, Ade could have had shared the same " I want to be part of a club" that finally brings back silverware to the Emirates. That priority is far more concrete than an ill defined abstraction such as biggest club in the world. Which is why you have to respect RVP. Whatever the reasons, I am glad that Ade is gone. I also acknowledge his extra-ordinary 2007-2008 season which helped the Gunners mount a serious challenge for the Premiership title. Unmistakable talent, questionable commitment. With Tevez, its the opposite. Whatever it is, Mark Hughes has his hands full.
