Yeah it was a definite red, you can see him swing back at him. Could it be said that maybe he thought Mtiliga was closer to him and he was trying to keep him away? It was not as bad as Rio Ferdinands elbow against Hull last week (which has resulted in a 3 match ban). Unfortunate for Ronaldo but he had to see red.
Well, it was confirmed that poor Mtiliga suffered a broken nose so I wouldn't say it was too harsh of a sending off.
