A very interesting comparision here of ankle injuries suffered by Maradona and Messi.
Maradona was hacked down from behind by Andoni (the butcher of Bilbao)Goikoetxea in 1983.He subsequently took to drugs during the time he was out of the game with a shattered ankle.Messi's injury thankfully is not so severe.

The butcher of Bilbao! I had the good fortune to see him play against Liverpool in 1983/84 in a European Cup tie at Anfield. Liverpool later went on to win it all.
