Northampton consign Liverpool to Carling Cup misery

A historic win for Northampton who beat Liverpool on PKs 4-2 after the match tied 2-2 once regulation and extra time was over. For Liverpool, it represents one of their lowest points. It all started brightly enough for the Reds as Milan Jovanovic shot them into an early lead. But the Cobblers who play in League 2 showed some real fighting spirit with Liverpool looking sloppy on defense. In the second half, Northampton leveled the score with Billy McKay's goal.

In extra time, the visiting side ranked 69 places below Liverpool shot into the lead when Michael Jacobs drove in the ball after the defense failed to clear the ball. David Ngog managed to pull off an equalizer a few minutes before the end. Would Liverpool be able to pull through in the PKs to avoid ignominy? Sadly for them it were the League 2 minnows looking far more assured and when Abdul Osman swept in his penalty the humiliation was complete.

This was not the end of the bad news coming out of Anfield as Christian Purslow, the managing director divulged that the club was barely able to service its debt and interest loaded onto its books by Tom Hicks and George Gillett.
