A rueful looking Diego Lopez fished out the ball from goal after two sublime free kicks by Cristiano Ronaldo had him beaten all ends up. Villarreal lost to Real, 1-3.
Goal number 37 and 38 for Ronaldo drew him level with legends Telmo Zarra and Hugo Sanchez's record of most league goals scored in a season. Real close out their season against relegated Almeria at home which should provide Ronaldo with some real opportunities to run up the score.
Before that Marcelo put Real up chipping over Lopez sweetly after his surging run. Cani was able to narrow the gap for the Yellow Submarines after Marcelo was turned around by Mario Gaspar who laid a nice cross which the midfielder finished off.
Both Valencia and Villarreal have sewn up Champions League spots.
