Anthony Gardner's own goal gave Cardiff the best possible start as the Bluebirds drew level on aggregate after losing in the first leg to a goal, ironically, scored by the aforementioned Gardner. Cardiff had five very good looks at goal (three by Kenny Miller) but could not convert those chances. The match went to PKs where Tom Heaton, Cardiff's custodian pulled off two remarkable saves. Jonathan Parr then pulled his attempt wide and the Bluebirds were through where they meet either Liverpool or Man City.

Palace were reduced to 10 men in the 78th minute after captain Paddy McCarthy was sent off for fouling Miller twice.
