Manchester City got a 3 – 0 thrashing and Arsenal collected their second piece of silverware in three months.
So is the traditional curtain-raiser to the new English season raising the curtain on a brand new dawn for Arsenal? The victory over City was pretty emphatic – Santi Cazorla after 21 minutes, Aaron Ramsey after 42 and a stunning long-range third from Olivier Giroud at about the 60th minute.
City could make the excuse that they were missing seven players who played in the World Cup but Arsenal can answer that by saying that they too were missing their three German World Cup winners Mesut Ozil, Per Mertesacker and Lukas Podolski.
