Toothless Liverpool fall to Basel

Luis Suarez teeth
There sure is no bite to Liverpool’s attack

Basel has a thing for administering harsh reality checks to big spending Premier League clubs. St Jakob Park has proven troublesome for Liverpool in 2002, Man Utd in 2011, and most recently Chelsea last season. Liverpool barely got the better of Ludogorets in their first CL match in nine years but found far more wily and skillful opposition in the Swiss side. That and the stop Raheem Sterling and you stop Liverpool tactic. Sterling did not do any favours as his usual touch was distracted. So far Mario Balotelli remains a headcase who doesn’t score as many goals as he should. Daniel Sturridge is still out.

If the attack is cause for concern, the defense is positively giving Brendan Rodgers angina. Basel’s only goal came from a set piece and it involved Martin Skrtel misdirecting his header to Mignolet who kept the ball out but straight to a lurking Marco Streller who made no mistake. Liverpool’s best player was Mignolet making some very fine saves.
