This match barely had a pulse and the only time it did, England fell as Eugenie Le Sommer rifled in a rasping, rising shot in the 29th minute which beat Karen Bardsley near post. The match was built on high expectations. England had come in much touted as one of the most improved national sides ready to elevate and include themselves in the league of heavy hitters; the USA, Germany, Brazil, and France. The last time they had beaten Les Bleus was 40 years ago.

The Le Sommer strike did stir the English out of their somnolence but despite the positive introduction of Toni Duggan and Fran Kirby, were strangely focused on damage limitation and episodic but futile forays. France on the other hand boasting the attacking likes of Le Sommer, Elodie Thomis, Gaetane Thiney, Louisa Necib the female Zidane and ably marshaled in midfield by Camile Abily took time to get going but after the Le Sommer strike seemed largely content hogging possession and running out the clock.
