Red hot Mahrez makes Spurs pay as Foxes draw level

All hail Riyad Mahrez because this man is hot, hot, hot. Four goals in three matches, six in his last six. His equalizer came as Spurs still celebrating Dele Alli’s goal not half a minute ago were unable to stop the Algerian from latching onto Jamie Vardy’s knockdown off a Wes Morgan long ball and then cutting inside Jan Vertonghen to lash a shot past Hugo Lloris with his left foot. This was about right as earlier in the first half, Vertonghen clearly brought down Mahrez kicking his leg out from under in the box for a penalty not given by Martin Atkinson.

Spurs had lots of midfield possession but with Harry Kane isolated as much as Tom Hanks in Castaway with a coconut for company they looked unlikely to score. Things marginally improved with Alli’s introduction and in the 80th minute, Nacer Chadli from the edge of the box scooped the ball over to find an unmarked Alli far post springing to head the ball into goal. Mahrez worked his magic seconds later and a few minutes after, the Foxes with their tails ramrod straight came oh so close to scoring the winner when Wes Morgan got his bull head on a cross for a bullet of a header but straight to Lloris and he was not slow about it. The ball was kicked to safety.

The Foxes are now unbeaten in nine home games, winning six of them. King Power stadium is virtually impregnable and the Tinkerman is not tinkering anymore. Seven points and in first place for now. Who would have thought that at the beginning of the season?
