The centerpiece of the 2022 World Cup is the Al Wakrah Stadium which looks like a giant vagina from above, gateway to a womb to the mostly male audience that will come to enjoy the beautiful game at the 2022 World Cup. In that enclosure of protection, blank slate, the spectators can forget Qatar’s many human rights violations. The upshot is a monarchy, the richest country in the world, relying on South Asian indentured labor to keep their tryst with the World Cup. Their iron handedness has led to thousands of deaths, a veritable killing field.

Zaha Hadid, the visionary behind the Al Wakrah Stadium recently passed away. As one of the world’s leading architects and a contrarian, her buildings are well known for their futuristic elements. Qatar commissioned her to design their signature stadium before the 2014 World Cup and Hadid, an Iraqi born naturalized English citizen was soon embroiled in the controversy, defending her decision to take on the project, as the toll from Qatar’s inhuman working conditions mounted.

Things became testy as Hadid cut short a BBC interview after being asked about migrant worker deaths associated with her project. There were none, as technically the site was yet to get off the ground. However, Hadid’s guilt is a guilt by association as Qatar’s World Cup becomes a flashpoint in corruption and human rights abuse.
