St Totteringham’s Day might still be on as Spurs fall to Soton

Steven Davis Tottenham-v-Southampton

The last few weeks have proved extremely frustrating for Spurs. Their title chances took a grievous blow after drawing with West Brom. A sliver of hope remained in the fixture against Chelsea and for 83 minutes it looked like the North London side would pull of their first win since 1990 before Eden Hazard equalized with his dagger through the heart curler. A two goal lead had been blown. A match which had boiled over with various incidents of misconduct from both sides just got a lot uglier. Mousa Dembele joined the already suspended Dele Alli with an extended version of a 6 match ban.Leicester was gifted their title and a chance to celebrate even before the ball had been kicked at the King Power Stadium.

Spurs entered the match against Southampton with the knowledge that a victory would secure them second and over Arsenal in the final league standings in 20 years. Again, like the previous matches Spurs went ahead with Heung Min Son’s perseverance and craftiness paying off after Harry Kane played him onside and Mauricio Pochettino’s side was buzzing with energy and invention if not the end product to add to the first goal. Soton like Leicester have found a third, fourth, and a fifth gear, late in the season. They had come into White Hart after spanking a toothless City and weren’t ready to be rolled over. Steven Davis had managed just two goals all season but against Spurs he became a killer – some would point fingers at Hugo Lloris and the Spurs defence for conceding a brace of soft goals. This was the 20th point dropped from a winning position, tops in the league.

Arsenal’s final match is against already relegated Aston Villa, one which they should win. Spurs have a more tricky one against Newcastle who are battling relegation although the Toons hurt their chances badly by drawing Villa. Should Sunderland win against Everton mid week it will all be over for their bitterest rivals. Newcastle will not have anything to play for except pride. However, if Everton do overcome the Mackems then it should make for a very contested match. Maybe, just maybe, St Totteringham’s Day could still take place. On the last day.
