Very bad news for Argentina. Messi has been given a four match ban for insulting an assistant referee during their last game against Chile – which they incidentally won because of a Messi goal.
Now he can’t play against Bolivia in their next game and will also be MIA for the other qualifiers against Uruguay,Venezuela and Peru.
Argentina are third in the 10-team South American group with 22 points from 13 games but have only a two-point cushion over sixth-placed Chile, with Colombia (21) and Ecuador (20) sandwiched in between.
Without Messi,Argentina may well end up not qualifying.
