An iconic photograph showing six Belgian defenders lining up to stop Maradona in the 1982 World Cup.Belgium went on to win that game 1 – 0 and it turns out that the photograph does not do justice to the Belgian’s successful strategy to contain Maradona in that game.Maradona would have to wait for another four years to lift that coveted World Cup.
Argentina won the World Cup in 1986 and Maradona won the Best Player award.
In the following year he led his club Napoli to the first of two serie A titles that they would win with him in the team.
Napoli also won the Coppa d’Italia, a UEFA Cup and an Italian Supercup during Maradona’s seven-year tenure with the club.
The Naples City Council voted recently to honour Maradona the legend by giving him honorary citizenship.
That took place on the 5th of July. Maradona had the following to say on the day before the ceremony.
“I’ve been a citizen since the first moment I pulled on the No. 10 jersey,”
“I thank my teammates, without whom I wouldn’t be here today and we wouldn’t have won all that we won. I dedicate this citizenship to my mother, my father and all the Neapolitans.
“Tomorrow will be an unforgettable day for me. I also want to point out that those who said I am here for money are lying. I earned my status as a Neapolitan on the field,”
