Dempsey impresses in Fulham debut

Clint Dempsey landed at Craven Cottage at full clip to a rousing reception from the Fulham faithful. He was a 82nd minute substitute against the Spurs and immediately got into the action with his deft passing, one of which found Michael Brown whose long ball was headed down by Anthony Gardner at the feet of Brian McBride. The American striker wheeled around and struck a rasping shot from 20 yards away. It found Michael Dawson’s hand as the Spurs defender tried to parry away the shot. The resulting PK was converted by Montella and the Cottagers were up one. However, the Spurs struck back with a disputed goal by Chimbonda in the 88th minute and the match was drawn.
American goalkeepers went 3-0 against their opponents as Brad Friedel and Blackburn polished off Manchester City, 3-0, Everton and Tim Howard overcame the Latics, 2-0 and Reading with Marcus Hahnemann outplayed Sheffield United, 3-1 in an incident filled match that saw Utd defender Kevin Gillespie thrown out and the resultant rumpus spilled into the coaches corner with Neil Warnock and Wally Downes having a go at each other. Both were ejected too.
