The American striker wheeled around and struck a rasping shot from 20 yards away. It found Michael Dawson's hand as the Spurs defender tried to parry away the shot. The resulting PK was converted by Montella and the Cottagers were up one. However, the Spurs struck back with a disputed goal by Chimbonda in the 88th minute and the match was drawn.
American goalkeepers went 3-0 against their opponents as Brad Friedel and Blackburn polished off Manchester City, 3-0, Everton and Tim Howard overcame the Latics, 2-0 and Reading with Marcus Hahnemann outplayed Sheffield United, 3-1 in an incident filled match that saw Utd defender Kevin Gillespie thrown out and the resultant rumpus spilled into the coaches corner with Neil Warnock and Wally Downes having a go at each other.
