Darren Bent to the Spurs? Not likely

Spurs have the best balance in attack in my opinion. With Robbie Keane, Dimitar Berbatov, Jermaine Defoe, Jermaine Jenas, Aaron Lennon, and Didier Zokora at their disposal, the Spurs show some awe inspiring firepower. Spurs finished strong last season due to their match play upfront and in Berbatov a star was born. It was the injuries to their defense and indifferent form in the left back position that slowed them down leaving them vulnerable. They are close to jettisoning the disgruntled Mido to Fulham and have signed on Gareth Bale who will bolster the left back position.
So why on earth would the Spurs splurge 16-17 million pounds on Darren Bent? There is talk that if Bent goes to the Spurs then Defoe will be shipped to Pompey or to another club. I saw a Defoe coming into his own this season. He Combined well with Berbatov during Keane’s injury and scored 10 goals. Bent would be better off at Newcastle where Owen is threatening to leave or at Liverpool in case the Fernando Torres bid falls through.

  1. I agree to a certain extent, but if Mido goes we do need a proven 4th striker, Barnard is coming through and in my opinion is ready but is it too much of a risk with so much at stake this coming season?

  2. Because, simple really, is that Defoe and Keane don’t play well together. You can’t mix and match much with them three. What happens if berba is injured (God forbid)? Needs a rest? We need to have someone who’s style of play suits all forwards. I agree, bent isn’t worth that amount but Chorlton are standing firm and good luck to ’em. We would do the same – remember carrick?
With Mido all but gone, we need another striker if we really want to complete this season.

  3. i see the purchase of Bent as expensive and pointless. Defoe is not so bad, i see it as replacing your current car with exactly the same make and model but paying double the money for the privelage and with players like Barnard coming thru the money would be better spent on left wingers and maybe a holding midfield so Zakora can get forward more.

  4. Spurs need to sell Defoe who only has two years on his contract and Bent is a good replacement. There doesn’t seem to be much more to it than that.

  5. Most definately agree ….. not to mention paying 15 mil plus is only driving up the averaged cost of all transferes !
Would Much rather another scouted unkown (Berba was a mostly unknown) for a couple of mill & give the reserve boys a blooding !

  6. lets have this right … Tottenham will have 4 quality strikers … make no doubt about it !! Berbs, Keane, Defoe and Bent…. oh my God, that is fiersome.. no premiership club could boast the much firepower. and with 60 + games next season we will need that many to sustain a challenge on all fronts. heaven forbid we get injuries, we need to backup. Berbs and Keane CANT play in every game. So my hope is that Bent and Defoe form their very own LETHAL partnership and push the other 2 all the way for a starting place. can you imagine it !!! the combos will be deadly – Bent and Berbs, Keane and Bent, Defoe and Berbs…. this list goes on…. so come on lads think of the positives… we are assembling a fanstastic squad here… and everyone is taking notice… embrace what is going on and LOVE your Spurs… we deserve it !! COYS !!!

  7. Maybe Spurs will have secure the signing of Darren Bent because Dimitar Berbatov is on his way to Manure??

  8. Jermaine Jenas, Aaron Lennon and Didier Zokora are midfielders, so you cant really count them as a “Strike Force” albeit that they do score goals (Not that Zokora has yet!)
And Bent will be a good signing leaving Spurs with 4 world class strikers.
playing 60 games a season isnt possible with 2 or 3.

  9. Jenas is not reliable enough and does not score goals, to call Zokora a striker is a joke!! (Row Z Thats Zokora!!) Defoe is far too greedy to play alonside Berbatoff to get the best out of him which leaves the versatility of Keeno and the excellent Berbs with the unknown elements of Lennon (will he won’t he now move to the next level- Ronaldo is the pinnacle to aim at, for a player like Lennon and he stil has some way to go-remember the promise of SWP?) Bent has scored regularly in the Premiership and as one Charlton fan said recently, without a decent pass! Just think what he would do with our midfield cooking…

  10. Well done, finally someone with some sense. First of all, the thing that people are forgetting is that a striker like Bent is in NO WAY worth £17m…that’s a stupid price tag. It would be a waste of money for someone who’s hardly been amazing this season. Secondly, we don’t need Darren Bent as Robbie Keane and Dimitar Berbatov are probably the best strike-force in the Premiership. It’s all stupid rumours, and Charlton are a stupid stupid club for pricing a mediocre, average striker so high.

  11. Bent joining will not necessarily mean Defoe leaving – it will mean the end for Mido though, who made a complete hash of his opportunities last season.
Bent will mean that we have the depth of squad to be favourites for the UEFA Cup while seriously challenging for 3rd/4th & champs league.
Now we just need the left midfield sorted, and either of Davies or Kaboul at the back & things will look good for us overhauling the Goons.

  12. I completely agree we have very strong line up at front and totally not convince with someone who had one good season and in his second season he’s help to get his side relegated, not him directly but due to fact he hasn’t scored enough goals we would better off spending the money on top class left sided midfelid player and someone in module of graham robert or Gary Mabbutt style of player with never say die attitude ..
if Charlton won’t sell for 14 million then let keep their player because if they don’t get great start too next season campaign the management will lucky to get 7-8 million for bent then but we all know the Charlton board very good at making great football decision.. who else would sacked let long term manager go sack another after 14 games and replace him with I’m not to blame les reed

  13. i don’t c y we wud want to spend 17milon bent wen berba was onli 10.9mil & we have defoe who iz highr up in da englnd pecking order dispite nt playin regularly, & he wudnt be a replcement for mido as hes not a target man who u realy c defoe & bent playin 2geva or even wid keane da onli reason i can c 4 signin bent is as a replacement 4 defoe as hes a better natural goalscorer,

  14. Your analysis reflects a true picture of the situation at Tottenham. Bent’s arrival would cause problems and destabilize the team. He has been quoted demanding first team appearances and nothing less “to boost his international career with England” and he is entitled to that. But would his demand be compatible with Martin Jol’s selection policy based on rotation? Not likely. So, Bent will obviously be frustrated as has Defoe over the past two seasons. And from an analytical perspective, there is relative difference in scoring skills between the would be incoming Bent and the would be outgoing Defoe. I believe Tottenham should look for someone, replacing Mido, who is willing to take his opportunities as and when they present themselves rather than enforcing himself on the manager; someone for far less than 17 million GBP.
Last season, Tottenham introduced several new players at all departments and obviously they needed some time to settle in, but at the expense of too many points as the team sustained unusual home defeats to the likes of Everton, Newcastle and Liverpool. Too many changes will only unsettle the team and that was a good lesson which Martin Jol does not seem to reflect on. Indeed, the team finished the season strongly and much stronger than many including those who were above Tottenham and we think that the same composition of players with added cement at the back would start the new season in the same fashion for at least the first 10 games without Bent’s contribution.

  15. If you don’t know why Tottenham need a player like Darren Bent, you clearly don’t know much about the club or how it plays.

  16. Bent will be a good signing, and yes as a spurs fan I will relish having Bent in the side, it can only be positive. We will then have two big man little man combinations that we have been trying to gel for so long (Keane- Berba or Defoe-Bent or vv) Cant see Defoe leaving now and I really hope he stays, besides that will mean we will need to buy another striker!!! I think we have actually bought a big striker that will make an impact, reagrding Bent comes. I dreaded us buying another Rasiak, Zamora or Mido…Come on you spurs… Onwards and Upwards

  18. Yes, no one has said Bent is not a good player, but the problem is his grossly over-inflated price. The yard-stick for evaluating a new player is performance(s), cohesion, consistency, adaptation and above all, as in Bent’s case, the number of goals he scores. It is a gamble. But what a gamble with 17 million Pounds!

  19. DON’T BUY BENT! DON’T BUY BENT! DON’T BUY BENT! Please don’t do it. What a waste of $17 million. For that money we could be Quagliarella & Sneijder. And, maybe they won’t come to the lane, but then lets hold on to our money until world class young players are available. Bent is a bad move and he’s going to be gigantic waste of money. He’s just not a Tottenham player. What is the point of having a strike of Berbatov’s grace and guile when he has to link up with a player that couldn’t pass a ball five yards with any amount of accuracy. DON’T BUY BENT!
