Transfer rumours: Per Mertesacker and Obafemi Martins

Aston Villa is reportedly interested in acquiring German and Werder Bremen defender Per Mertesacker and his beanpole 6'6" frame to Villa Park to bolster a defense that is thin in the depth chart. They need another central defender to provide Mellberg company. So far Villa has done well to keep opposing teams away from goal but the season is young and injuries are a concern. Plus, they really need Gareth Barry's services as a midfielder and not as a makeshift outside back.

Arsenal and Man Utd are again reportedly in the hunt for Obafemi Martins although Big Sam insists that there have been no negotiations for big Nigerian striker. But I can see why both clubs would be very interested as the undersized Eduardo who has impressed with his speed has not really been up to the mark when it comes to the physical challenges. Man Utd needs a physical presence now that Wayne Rooney has gone. Tevez is a snappy little player with his legs constantly in motion but he has not yet proved to be a major threat in the box.

Martins transfer rumours have been done to death but there are a few days left in the transfer window and Wenger could still spring a surprise.

Cant see Martins going anywhere unless someone offers the 13 million. At that point if his heart is not in it we move on, grab the best creative midfielder we can find releasing Smith up front for good.
