Michael Owen scored a winning goal against a Malaysian side that mounted a comeback after Rooney and Nani put them through.

Van Der Saar and then his replacement Ben Foster made it interesting by giving away two goals. This set up Owen who substituted Rooney in the second half and volleyed home in his second attempt. Sir Alex was happy with his effort:

Regarding Owen, Ferguson said: 'He's different from our other players, he's always searching for space, he's always in and around the box. He reacted well for his goal.'

Owen was also pleased with his performance:

He was also delighted to grab a first goal for United, adding: 'It's a nice feeling and it's nice to play a game in the red shirt. Just to get off the mark for the season is nice, and it's probably doubly good for me as it's my first game as well.'
