Sadly, Miriam Makeba passed away a year ago. Having her on stage would have been a treat. However, she lives on this rendition of Pata Pata and countless other songs. Many have sung Makeba’s beautiful “Malaika” but no one has come close. A salute to Mama Afrika on the day of the World Cup draw. She would have been proud of her country’s historical moment.
On her death, Nelson Mandela paid tribute:
” She was South Africa’s first lady of song and so richly deserved the title of Mama Afrika. She was a mother to our struggle and to the young nation of ours.”
