Ronaldo's Getafe hat trick brings him closer to Zarra and Sanchez

Cristiano Ronaldo seems to be a liberated man after the series of El Clasicos showcased Leo Messi's versatility as a goalscorer. But Ronaldo's direct and muscular approach is enough to browbeat lesser opposition. Today it was Getafe and he was on target with a hat trick. Nothing elaborate or spectacular. Karim Benzema also added to the tally.

Ronaldo is now on 36 goals and ahead of Messi's 31 goals for the Pichichi race. More significantly he is now in sight of Telmo Zarra and Hugo Sanchez's record of 38 goals in a single season with two matches left. That is illustrious company.

Zarra is Spain's record goal scorer in the Primera with 252 goals in 278 matches and a six time winner of the Pichichi. Sanchez is second in goals scored and a five time Pichichi winner while at Real Madrid, four of them consecutively.

Meanwhile Barcelona can close out on the Liga title with a draw against visiting Levante tomorrow. They have a game in hand over Real who are five points behind and also have an better goal differential and a head to head advantage.
