Premier League: Chelsea hammer mistake prone Everton, 6-3

Diego Costa

He might have cost a lot of money but so far he’s been worth every penny

Everton had the lions share of possession, 60% to Chelsea’s 40%, played attractive football in large parts, but were let down by abysmal defending and an opponent that ruthlessly punished every mistake. Diego Costa was brutal maximizing Fabregas and John Obi Mikel’s service to him. He was also feisty and in your face keeping up a patter of trash talk with Seamus Coleman and Tim Howard, the latter getting booked for his reaction. Four goals in 3 matches, i.e., light years of Fernando Torres who took all of 14 matches and 903 minutes to score his first league goal for Chelsea. Everton to be fair, rebounded magnificently after being shell shocked in the opening minutes by goals from Costa and Branislav Ivanovic. Goodison Park must have felt they had turned the tide when Samuel Eto’o scored Everton’s third goal, in the process reminding Mourinho of his ageism, narrowing the scoreline to just a goal difference. But Ramires punched another hole in the Swiss cheese defense and then Muhammad Besic’s ill thought back heel proved costly turning the ball right into the path of Mikel who galloped ahead and back heeled to Costa, who turned Howard inside out and falling down and then smashed the ball into the far corner. That was the gestalt. A Tim Howard sprawled out on his butt. And no more “boring, boring Chelsea”. Chelsea are on top and Everton have had the toughest three weeks.
