WWC 2015: England overcome spirited Colombia

England 2 – 1 Colombia All Goals HD 17.06… by eurofootballhd

Karen Carney nutmegged Sandra Sepulveda after the goalie parried a Steph Houghton free kick into her path. The Colombian defence was caught napping. England’s second goal came after Carolina Arias was adjudged to have committed a handball (rather unfairly) following a goalmouth scramble when she slid to block a shot but the ball struck her hand as she lay on the ground. It was unintentional but ref Carol Ann Chenard thought otherwise and awarded a PK. Veteran midfielder Fara Williams successfully converted.

Colombia came back in the second half gaining plenty of possession but lacking the final third quality to create too many attacking opportunities. They did manage a last minute goal after Lady Andrade skillfully lobbed the ball over Karen Bardsley. However, they still go through to the Round of 16 as the best of the third place finishers. With one caveat, Sepulveda will not be their goalie as she received her second booking in the group stage for upending sub Jodie Taylor.
