Luka Modric,believe it or not,is five years older than his nation. He was born on september 9th 1985 and his country became an independent nation on the 25th of June 1991.
And so, at the ripe old age of 41, Modric had to see Croatia endure the worst defeat in their footballing history when they got hammered 7-0 by England in the UEFA Nations League.
“It is difficult to find an explanation for such a performance without duels, fouls, aggressiveness, togetherness… I’ve been here for 20 years, but for the first time I feel ashamed after a game,” Modrić told Croatian daily Jutarnji. (LP)
The only other Croatians who got to witness the brutal spectacle were 6,000 schoolchildren . Other Croatian supporters were banned from the game because of previous bad behaviour. The kids got to see their country getting beaten but also to see England put up a masterclass performance. Four goals before the break and three after against a Croatian defence that went AWOL shortly after the referee started the game and remained so till he brought the painful performance to a close.
