In which Victoria Beckham finally shows some emotion

Victoria Beckham’s usual visage
There wasn’t the most enormous amount of love for Beckham, it had to be said, until the 60th minute, of course, when his free kick put England ahead and all earlier suggestions were retracted without irony. Not the best time for the giant televisions to go on the blink, perhaps, but the second they flickered back into life a hundred €4 beers were cast skywards. Cut to the shot of the tradtionally stony-faced Victoria Beckham leaping to her feet in the stands. “At last!” cackled an English fan. “She’s only bloody smiling!”

  1. SR, I will say I do not understand all the antagonism toward Beckham. I don’t have a dog in this fight, but it seems to me that he has had a pretty good tournament. 1 goal (plus the own goal off of his kick) plus 2 assists – more than the whole US team can say.
The guy is 31 and reminds me of Lawrence Taylor in his later years with the Giants. He has lost a step, but commands attention on the field and will occasionally show a flash of what made him an all world player. The goal he scored was beautiful…EVERYONE knew it was coming, but he still pulled it off.
I did find it funny though – it seems like ABC showed 3 replays of the goal and 6 of Vicky. Not that I am complaining…

  2. Tilam,
I think it is a bit of jealousy. He is a guy who grew up in a rough neighborhood and made it big.
Plus statements like the one George Best made while describing Beckham’s game,”He cannot kick with his left foot, he cannot head a ball, he cannot tackle and he doesn’t score many goals. Apart from that he’s alright” don’t really help him in the public eye.

  3. Best was a cheeky guy.
Maybe I am just used to prima donna athletes in baseball, football and, especially, basketball. (And I certainly do not follow his foibles on a regular basis.) Beckham may have gotten a bit too big for the game, but the criticism does seem to me (as an outsider) a bit over the top.
That’s crazy, huh, the British press over the top.
