The best and the worst of Arsenal’s 2006 season

Dare you to disagree ……..
Best goal. Van Persie’s strike against Charlton. Ranks as the goal of the season with Drogba’s against Liverpool and Essien’s against Arsenal. (Compare here and here and here)
Best win. Arsenal vs Man Utd, 2-1. A superb game against the Premiership champs showing what two quality strikers could do with Arsenal’s impeccable approach work. It was especially satisfying to see the absolute crushed look on Sir Alex’s face. The match was also reportedly the most watched Premiership match in the world, emphasizing the global makeup of Arsenal’s team. (Video here 9+ mins)
Best losing effort. The Carling Cup final with Chelsea playing a valiant Arsenal youth squad which played brilliantly in spells, falling to two Drogba goals, 2-1 after Walcott gave them the lead. This match was played with so much emotion with Terry was stretchered off, Adebayor suspended, Wenger fined, a team brawl ensued and three players sent off. The most discussed match this season. (Video here). 10 mins.
Best under rated player. Gael Clichy. He was a revelation, the speedy left full back loved to travel upfield, was good with his tackles, chased down balls, and showed he was a tough customer. (Video here)
Best comedy moment. Probably the comedic highlight of this season’s Premiership. (Video here)
Best piece of acting. Eboue versus Wayne Rooney. (Video here).
Best Jens Lehmann save. Incredible piece of goalkeeping against Solskjaer. (Video here)
Worst piece of defending. Kolo Toure against Nade. Just atrocious. (Video here).
Worst after match handshake. (Video here). The guy commenting is an absolute ass, so turn down the volume.
Worst loss. Arsenal’s heartbreaking loss to West Ham at the Emirates. So many chances but Robert Green kept them away. It capped a miserable streak for the Gunners. (Video here)
Best Jens Lehmann comic routine. The Premiership’s favourite stand up comic gives a virtuoso performance (Video here)
Best player. Cesc Fabregas. His genius kept Arsenal alive. (Video here)
And finally the Arsenal season is summed up here. (Video here)

  1. I beg to disagree. The best win must the away win at Man U. A superb display of passing , containment of the opponents strengths and dominance. Away at Fergies den!

  2. I like poodles too, Tim.
AA, the win at the Emirates was IMO better because Arsenal came from behind and won in the last 8 mins of the game. The win was more deflating for Man U because the race to the Premiership was really heating up. The context of the match is important. Plus, did you see Fabregas and Rosicky win the ball away from Vidic and O’Shea setting up Eboue’s cross for the Henry header. The match was worth it for that little bit of hustle alone.

  3. You need to include the best goal celebration of the season … Henry/Adebayor’s African dance !!

  4. Liked your choices. Wenger’s choice for the season’s #1 highlight (in an interview broadcast on GolTV’s Arsenal TV program) was the Manu game at the Emirates. And I do love the Mad Monk.
Other then Jens and Didier Show, I loved Jens’ mocking of Kirkland’s timewasting antics at the Wigan game.
Craziest and absorbing game: the FA cup game against Bolton. The one where Arsenal scored a lot of goals and missed a lot of perfect chances in such crazy fashion.
And let’s not forget: Arsenal this season were the team that committed the least fouls and were the most fouled against. And got the most penalties.
