But it was a close thing.
And after finishing 16th in the league table again this year,Hamburg had to play Karlsruher and beat them to avoid being relegated after 52 years.
The first leg ended 1-1 and Karlsruher took the lead in the second leg when Yabo scored through Rene Adler’s legs.They kept that lead till the 90th minute of the game and were precious seconds away from victory when Diaz curled home a free kick – incidentally his first ever goal for Hamburg.
The game went to extra time and Hamburg scored again.
