The Confederations Cup gets underway in Russia

The Confederations Cup started out life in 1992 as the King Fahd Cup.It was adopted by the FIFA in 1997 and was then rechristened as the Confederation’s Cup.It’s played once in four years like the World Cup and it’s 10th incarnation has gotten underway in Russia.
Russia won their opening game beating New Zealand 2 – 0.
It’s a good way for teams to warm up for the World Cup in Russia next year by getting used to the condition’s etc.
The downside is that no country that has won the Confederations Cup has ever gone on to win the subsequent World Cup.
So if that taboo holds teams that want to win next year have to make sure they lose this year.
Apart from the superstitions connected with winning the Confederations Cup in Russia when there’s a world cup being held there next year,there’s also some darker reasons why playing football in Russia is not such a great idea.
These include deeply entrenched racism,oppressive social and labour related policies.
