It’s broken the record as the most violent incident in the history of football in Brazil. The Brazilian record of 22 red cards occurred in a 1954 match between: Associação Portuguesa de Desportos and Botafogo de Futebol e Regatas in 1954. What actually happened in that game which caused the referee dish out 22 red cards lost in the mists of time. ( though google may still remember) What happened on the 8th of march is still pretty fresh in the minds of those concerned.
First off – it wasn’t Hulk’s fault. He threw a few punches and got kicked in the chest – which is why he is angry. He got caught up in the mass brawl in the Campeonato Mineiro final in Brazil between Cruzeiro and Atletico Mineiro. The carnage took place in the final seconds of the match and it included players and staff. When the dust settled 23 red cards had to be handed out.
23 red cards. Twelve players from Cruzeiro and eleven from Atlético Mineiro were sent off.
Ironically, amid all the madness, the actual football result stood. Cruzeiro’s 1–0 victory meant they lifted the state championship trophy. Yet the triumph was overshadowed by one of the ugliest scenes in Brazilian football history.
