Iran’s presence at World Cup 2026?

Iran are in Group G at the World Cup and are scheduled to play in Los Angeles. They are to face New Zealand and Belgium on 15th and 21st June respectively and then go on to play against Egypt in Seattle on 26 June.

All that now is up in the air.

Iran, often known as Team Melli, has qualified for the World Cup six times (so far), but has never progressed beyond the group stage. The nickname “Team Melli” comes directly from the Persian (Farsi) language.“Melli” (ملی) means “national” in Persian. So when people say Team Melli, they are literally saying “The National Team.”

6 world cup apprearances is not bad at all. The only other gulf country to appear in 6 world cups is Saudi Arabia.

Iran’s World Cup record

  • 1978 – Argentina
  • 1998 – France
  • 2006 – Germany
  • 2014 – Brazil
  • 2018 – Russia
  • 2022 – Qatar

It will be a real shame if they dont make it for their 7th World Cup. FIFA have not made any official statements so far. They are waiting and hoping for the best like everyone else .
