Serie A haunted by the Ghost of scandals past

The ghost of Calciopoli has come back to haunt Serie A. Italian football has been rocked by allegations involving top refereeing officials. Figures responsible for appointing referees and overseeing VAR have stepped aside amid investigations into possible “sporting fraud.”

At the heart of the probe are claims that referee assignments and VAR decisions may have been manipulated during the previous season. While no clubs have been formally charged so far, the mere suggestion of bias, particularly toward title-chasing teams, has been enough to ignite outrage.

The situation is still unfolding, but the damage to public trust has already begun.

Inter Milan are on the verge of winning the title, but suspicion spoils the winning feeling. Not easy to say “bah humbug” and walk away.
