Can Pirlo revive Italy?

2014 was the last time Italy graced the world with their presence in the world cup. That’s a long time ago and their challenge ended in the group stage itself.

3 missed World Cups for a country of Italy’s calibre is a major disaster.

The talent is right there… What’s missing?

Well, the italian ballon d’or winner Roberto Baggio (remembered in legend in song as the man who died standing) once wrote a 900 page documentary talking about the renaissance of Italian football.

One of the main issues he raised was the need to let the defensive style go and nurture the talented forwards of Italy. A lot to ask from a country known for its (once) impregnable defence.(Maldini, Nesta, Baresi, etc). His suggestions were largely ignored and the fortunes of the national squad have not changed.

However the Italian football federation seem to have finally woken up from their slumber.

Andrea Pirlo has been handed the job of head coach of the national squad.

If anyone can nurture attacking talent, it surely is Pirlo. He has proved that at Juventus. He he made CR7 strive once more at the ripe old age of 35 and made the young Dybala shine brightly.

Defence isn’t entirely forgotten though, as Maldini will be toughening them behind the scenes.

Can Pirlo bring out the new-gen Totti and Del Piero? The Azzuri have their fingers crossed …

The bad news is that his appointment is already coming under fire . Something to do with the Russians ! (LP)
