Ronaldo and Modric wore their their 232nd and 202nd caps for their countries when Portugal faced Croatia in the last 32. At 41 and 40 years old respectively its not likely that they ever will face each other again at the national level.
Ronaldo, inspite of a trophy cupboard bursting at the seams and a billion or so records against his name still had never ever scored a single goal in knockout stages of the World Cup. The pressure was on him. So naturally he went ands scored two. ( The first one ufortunately didn’t count because it was marginally offside)
Luka Modric however didnt have any fairy tale ending. He was left with the memory of VAR denying Croatia an equalising goal that was within a hair’s width of being perfectly respectable. The good memory he will have is of the tiny error from Joaó Cancelo which led to Ivan Perisic scoring first for Croatia.
But that’s all they got.
Goncalo Ramos, the unsung hero, scored the winning header for Portugal in the 94th minute. (LP)
