After Germany beat minnows Curacao 7-1 there was much anticipation regarding how many goals the tiki taka champions of the world would beat a similarly minnowish Cabo Verde. For the geographically challenged here’s map showing where Cabo Verde is. I know its kind of hard to believe but it is smaller than Curacao .

So it would have been safe to assume that Cabo Verde, being smaller than Curacao would imply that Spain’s vastly superior line up would beat them by a larger margin than 7-1
But no one saw the 0- 0 draw coming. Spain tiki takaed themselves in knots and had more than the lion’s share of ball possesion -but they couldnt get past the goalie Vonzinha – who made 7 saves.
Fernan Torres missed what should have been an easy goal.
Lamine Yamal posted some philosphical post match musings ..
“First game of the World Cup and we add a point. We know that this is a long competition and that the goal is still far away, but we’ll keep working and everything will turn out as we hope, no doubt about it,” he posted on Instagram.
“I want to thank God for allowing me to play again after the injury, and also to my family for always being by my side, supporting and accompanying me every step of the way.”
Maybe Cabo Verde would have got the hammering everyone thought they were going to get had Yamal been there. But for now they have had the last laugh.
