Morocco’s streak of lucky and skillful victories came to a bitter end. They were defeated 2-0 by none other than their old French overlords. (France ruled Morocco from 1912 to 1956) ( Fyi)
It was pretty smooth sailing for France even though Morocco ‘s midfield prodigies Bouaddi and Ounahi kept an grip over possession. The French attackers,nevertheless, were relentless.
The Moroccan keeper Bonou deserves special recognition.He had a Buffon-esque performance – saving 7 out of the 9 crucial shots on target.This included keeping a Mbappe penalty at bay.
But then Mbappe showed his class by weaving past about a million defenders and curling one in .Dembele got a low driven goal shortly afterward.Thus,sadly, Moroccans had to book a flight back home.With their exit – the African continent bowed out of the tournament.
This run of theirs is just as good as the 2022 campaign. Which is pretty darn good by any standards.
France move forward, into the semi-finals.They are statistically the favorites to win.
But then we must remember what Mark Twain ( or perhaps Benjamin Disraeli) once wisely said, “There are three kinds of lies: lies, damned lies, and statistics” !!! (LP)
