Lukaku’s horror show as Belgium crash out of the World Cup

Romelu Lukaku vents his frustration

Romelu Lukaku had a final group match to forget. The Belgians were desperate for a win which would have sealed qualification to the round of 16. Against Croatia, the former Chelsea man had about 4 of the easiest chances to win it for them. But he flubbed them all. Maybe it was a lack of playing minutes but some of those misses especially the last one were quite jaw dropping. After the match was over with his frustration boiling over, Lukaku punched a plexiglass partition as it turns out very accurately, knocking it out of place. Thierry Henry did all he could to console the big man.

Croatia had their moments too but the match ending in a goalless draw suited them just fine. They qualified with Morocco who beat Canada, 2-1 topping group F. The Belgians were the victims, a long toothed shadow of the 2018 World Cup squad. The best Belgian side in history? That plaudit still belongs to the Eric Gerets, Enzo Scifo and Jan Ceulemans led 1982 World Cup side that went to the semi-finals. Enzo Scifo was awarded the young player in that World Cup for his skill on the ball scoring two goals.
